Rilsan® coating is a powder PA11 -nylon 11- developed and produced by Arkema® to prevent corrosion on metal goods.
Rilsan® is a unique biobased high performance polyamide, sinthesized from castor oil -Ricinnus Communis- i.e., it is of vegetal origin, not of fossil origin. As a plastic made from renewable resources, it reduces the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Rilsan® is a thermoplastic and it has different features than other commonly used industrial coatings, thermosettings -epoxy, polyester. During the coating process Rilsan® does not reticulate, instead, there is a fusion onto the substrate to be coated. This special feature allows an easy quality control of the coating because melting can be observed by naked eye, while thermosettings involve a chemical reaction and thus, it has to be complete to reach the expected coating quality.
Generally speaking, thermosettings are hard coatings but more fragile and less resistant to abrasion and wear than thermoplastics.
Rilsan® has a density between 1,04 and 1,25 g/ml, lower than other powder coatings – epoxy, polyester- which entails a higher performance and an easier control of the coating thickness.
Rilsan® has no limited shelf life or it is much longer, which is also different to thermosettings.
Outstanding features of Rilsan® coatings:
- Outstanding corrosion resistance
- Sliding surface – low friction coefficient
- Noise and vibration reduction
- Wear resistance
- Easy cleaning
- Resistance to commonly used cleaning and desinfection agents
- Resistance to corrosive industrial environments
- Resistance to sea environments – contact to sea water and brine
- Outdoor exposure – UV resistance
- Thermal insulation
- Electric insulation
- Food contact certification approvals
- Water contact certification approvals: Kiwa, WRAS, DWI, KTW, W270, ATA, NSF61, RD 140/2003, AS4020
